4 the Mzinga is a band from Kilifi who play Mtamwe music,a Giriama style of downtempo dance music that is very polyrhythmic,yet rich in the soulful melodics of the Mijikenda. It is built on off-beats and repetitive call and response. Mtamwe is traditionally performed by the youth during palm wine drinking festivals, as an avenue to casually express themselves without offending the clan. Anyone is allowed to join in and offer lyrics according to their own afflictions, be it a confession of love, or a lamentation of tragedy.
