Volcano Band – Aninda Vurahi

Zechariah Adika and Hilium Indiazi  live in Mulinga, a small village north of Kisumu, Western Kenya. Both seasoned singers and guitar players, they together form Volcano Band and mostly perform locally for social gatherings, sometimes by themselves, sometimes with other singers and musicians from the village. As members of the Luhya tribe, they play a special style of Kenya’s famous Benga music called Omutibo, which is characterized by its guitar-picking style. Although musically influenced by secular genres, their lyrics are often concerned with spiritual messages and faith, bridging the divine with blessings they find in everyday life. A true glimpse into Kenya’s popular music of the 20th century, through a simple, rural and folky lens! This two-track release is part of Music From East Africa’s „Field Recordings from Western Kenya“ series.
